It Takes a Village

Writer's picture: Mel & RenMel & Ren

You’ve heard the concept before – it takes a village to raise our kids.

It’s an African proverb that means it takes many people to love and support your kids so they will grow up safely, and in a circle of support and with a sense of belonging.

But did you know that the same could be said about high achievers that want to move forward?

Yes - IT’S TRUE!!!

Some Facts for you:

#1. Successful high achievers believe that it takes a village.

It takes the love and the support of the tribe around successful high achievers to help them when they stumble, to guide them when they need help, to be there for them when they have a million questions on how to move forward.

There is no way that Mel and I could have achieved the success that we have in both our jobs, our personal lives and our coaching business without our villages.

In our jobs, COVID has changed how we lead staff and continue to engage the community.

How did we use our village? We called in our network from other organizations. We came up with plans together. We used each other’s strengths to learn and grow or found connections through our network.

Villages exist to create that sense of community and belonging and to help out wherever they can.

#2. Successful high achievers have a whole range of role models, experts and coaches guiding them.

Running our first marathons, Mel and I had coaches that supplied endless amounts of nutritional information, how to's, the best shoes to buy, even how to massage a leg cramp out.

We had friends that had run the exact race to take us through the course. We had @runningroom fit us for the shoes that would keep our bodies aligned. We had physiotherapists work on our knees when they couldn’t take it anymore. So many people to help us along the way.

But running a marathon was a dream. It was what we hoped and planned and worked hard to achieve and I say this without any doubt: we could have not made it without all of the role models, experts and coaches surrounding us.

It took both a financial investment and a huge time investment.

Oftentimes, many people spend money on things that make them feel better in the moment – new clothes, makeup, a Peloton bike that sits downstairs unused, another diet program because the other one didn’t work, a shiny new car, renovations, did I mention new clothes?!

But oftentimes we forget to invest in our long term self.

If your goal was to lose weight, did you invest time researching what the best way would be for you to do this? Did you start strong and have someone hold you accountable? Or did you give up part way through because that’s what you’ve always done.

If your goal was to learn how to deliver new presentations, did you join a club in order to learn and develop? Did you buy a program? Did you actually try and deliver a few presentations to get better?

That’s the thing with a village. They hold you accountable and they are there for you.

#3 Successful people are ok to ask for help. They are ok to say, "I feel lost. I feel tired. I don't feel motivated. Have any tips?”

We all go through periods of time in our lives that we lack motivation and want to curl up and on the couch. We feel exhausted. We are internally signaling a SOS.

As parents, Mel and I have learned the hard way of what it means to ask for help.

When we had our kids back to back (Mel – 1 year apart, Ren – 22 months apart), it was a lot. Like, so tired you couldn’t keep your eyes open to plan a playdate let alone take a shower on some days.

We thought we were supposed to do this on our own. Instagram and Facebook made it look so easy. All these moms were dressed up everyday, hair done and happy babies on their hip.

We often found ourselves asking: What was wrong with us that we couldn’t pull ourselves together?!?

So we asked another mom friend how they had it all figured out. And what she said changed how we saw ourselves. She said, “I don’t have it all figured out but I ask for help when I need it.”

So we tried it.

WE ASK FOR HELP AND WE ARE PROUD OF IT.

Because if more people asked for help, they wouldn’t feel so alone.

No Matter What you have going on in your life…

We understand that it takes a tribe of uplifting people and experts to help guide us when we literally stumble!

So many of us are waiting and thinking we can do it ourselves when the truth is,

If you could have done it yourself, you would have done so by now.
