Confidence: You do not have to be born with it!

Writer's picture: Mel & RenMel & Ren

Confidence is not necessarily something you were born with. It is something you can create. No matter if you do not feel confident, you need to believe it and get through it.

Here’s the truth about confidence:

> Confident people get insecure too.

We’d be lying if we said that we are never insecure, but confidence depends on what you do with those insecurities.

A few habits we have reduced or eliminated include:

· On the days when we feel less pretty, we do not post a picture of ourselves so that we depend on the likes that the post gets for our security.

· Unfollowed/unfriended those that bring out insecurities

· Toned down our worst thoughts

> You CAN fake confidence.

You can make yourself feel confident by simply changing your body language!

If you adopt high-power poses for two minutes, it increases your level of testosterone, decreases your level of cortisol, and makes you feel more powerful and less stressed. Think Super-person pose!

> Success does not equal confidence.

Typically, this works the other way around; you have to be confident before you reach success. You have to tap into and find your confidence at the beginning of your journey toward success. That inner confidence will grow stronger and stronger!

> Confident people are not confident ALL the time!

There are times when your confidence is so high you feel like you can take on the world! By contrast, there will be times when uncertainty and self-doubt kick in. For example, when Ren and I returned to work from maternity leave, we went from feeling confident and sure about our abilities in our careers, to uncertainty about ourselves and if we were still as capable as we were pre babies.

> Confidence does not mean you love or are naturally great at Public Speaking.

Even Brene Brown, author, Professor, awesome leader and motivator, gets nervous: "People often ask me if I still get nervous when I speak in public. The answer is yes. I'm always nervous. Experience keeps me from being scared, but I'm still nervous." Confidence does mean that you should have the inner strength and mechanisms to get up on that stage anyway. Why? Because you practice enough times to make yourself confident.

> Confident people take BIG risks

We take planned, calculated, smart goals; or risks if you will. As a result, we grow through the process and become more resilient and confident. Better yet, building on skills helps in taking more risks and improves the chances of achieving future goals

Remember:

The difference between a confident person and an insecure person is not what they think about themselves; it is the thoughts that they allow themselves to entertain. Try everyday to work on building and learning confidence!!
